Did you know that most institutions and many companies are now using check scanners which capture necessary information on checks and transmit the information electronically? This process eliminates the need to transport physical checks making the process safer and faster.
Here are some tips that we can all follow to assist in making this a smoother process:
Write checks in dark blue or black ink only.
- Check scanners cannot read light or colored ink. Please, no pink or gel pens. Although lovely looking, the check scanners will not pick up your writing in anything other than black or dark blue.
When ordering checks choose checks with light or no graphics designs.
- Check scanners pick up dark graphics and may obscure the information on the checks.
Write legibly so that the written and numeric dollar amounts can be read.
- This will help reduce processing errors as check scanners may pick up incorrect dollar amounts which are later misread by individuals.
Write checks accurately.
- Checks should have all necessary information: date, numeric and written dollar amount and signature. Numeric and written dollar amounts must agree.
When signing your name; do not go below the signature line; keeping the MICR line clear.
- Checks are imprinted with your institutions routing number, account number and check number. This is known as the MICR line. Special ink is used to encode the information. Writing over this information may hinder the check scanner from capturing the necessary information.
